RELEASE NEWS - DOUBLE COMPILATION ALBUMS

I’m beyond happy to announce that, via the wonderful people at Hidden Notes Records, all the music from etm has been released as two standalone compilation albums. More than that though the books you see below are the cherry on the cake. HNR wanted to design a book for each album containing pictures, quotes, bios and musings from each podcast episode and therefore each track, to me it’s like CD liner notes on steroids. They include a download link to the music and a few beautiful extras like risograph prints. Their in-house designer Adam Hinks has put together an amazing thing. I’m so grateful to the HNR team for approaching me to release this music, giving it a home and making the whole thing feel really proper. I never would have dreamt that this very digital project would exist in the material world like this. If you’re interested in buying one (or both!) of these Ltd Edition books, check out the links below.

You can purchase from Bandcamp, Rough Trade, Drift Record Shop, Resident, Banquet Records, Juno and more…

There has been some really lovely press about the albums and books so far, have a peruse of these:

#16B Oliver Coates [CHAT]

I’m so pleased to be releasing the second instalment of Oliver Coates’ appearance on the podcast. It’s hugely inspiring to hear him talk about his relationship to music and his current ‘cello slime’ practice. We also talk about some of his previous albums ‘Shelly’s On Zenn-La’, ‘Upstepping’ and ‘Remain Calm - the latter a collaborative album with Mica Levi. Those things, and plenty more.

#16A Oliver Coates [MUSIC MAKING]

I can’t believe my luck! Oliver Coates, an utterly brilliant cellist and electronic musician is the next guest. Someone I’ve been hoping to get on the podcast for some time now. I’m separating the MUSIC MAKING episode and the CHAT episode by two locations and one week. Out today is the MUSIC MAKING where we explore Olly’s recent experiments in cello and electronics, something he is calling ‘slime’. Listen to the episode below (or on whichever app you prefer). Find out more about him here. Thanks for visiting the etm site!

#12 Galya Bisengalieva

The 3rd instalment of series two features one hell of a violinist and experimental composer, Galya Bisengalieva. She has worked with some of the biggest names in music and is now making large and dangerous waves with her original compositions. Violin led music injected with a potent amount of electronics. Look for the episode on your app of choice here and get listening. More info, pics and links here.

extra mess • Hidden Notes Festival Pt.1

Very happy to be releasing the first of a two part episode, a podcast snapshot of an exciting new festival, Hidden Notes. The festival is a much needed contemporary classical focussed weekend of stellar artists. In this first part I speak with Manu Delago, Emily Hall, Emilie Levienaise-Farrouch and Erased Tapes record label founder Robert Raths. There is plenty of live recordings throughout the episode to really place you there at St Laurence Church where much amazing performances we experienced.

It was a really incredible weekend and I jumped at the opportunity to try something new with the podcast. Happy listening, I’m sure you’ll wish you were at Hidden Notes yourself!

series one • album release

I’m ruddy delighted to announce that all the music created in series one of the podcast is now out as a standalone album!! It’s an unusual album creation process that wouldn’t have been possible without the inspiring guest collaborators that joined me on the excuse the mess journey. A hugely warm thanks to Manu Delago, Laura Jurd, Emily Hall, Robert Ames, Mark Lockheart, Douglas Dare, Mira Calix, Emilie Levienaise-Farrouch and Matt Calvert. Also a special thanks to Mandy Parnell for putting her magic touch to the mastering and walking us all through the often mysterious process.

We’d love it if you share far and wide, but mostly we’d love it if you gave us a listen!
The album can be bought & streamed in all the usual places. Try it out on your ears.
